Fly into Cancun International (CUN) for Playa del Carmen and everything north of it, and into Tulum International (TQO) for Akumal, Tulum and the coast below. The whole choice comes down to one question: how far south is your bed? Puerto Aventuras is the only stretch where the two drive times land within about fifteen minutes of each other, and there the decision moves to your flight schedule instead.That second airport is new enough that plenty of advice online has not caught up with it. Tulum International opened on December 1, 2023 and picked up its own train station in September 2024. If a guide tells you Cancun is the only option, it was written before that.

The Cancun column is what Riviera Maya Haciendas quotes its own arriving guests, measured on Highway 307 in ordinary traffic. The Tulum column comes from road distance: the airport sits roughly 85 kilometers south of Puerto Aventuras, which is why the two columns cross over right around there.
Notice what the table does to the middle of the coast. For Playa del Carmen the gap is an hour in Cancun’s favor, and for Tulum it is nearly two hours in Tulum’s. Akumal is the one that surprises people. It feels like Cancun territory, yet Tulum saves 45 minutes on that drive, which puts it in the southern half of the decision. Down at Puerto Aventuras the columns genuinely converge, fifteen minutes apart, and anyone booking there should stop weighing the drive and start comparing departure times, layovers and fares.
29.47 million passengers moved through CUN in 2025, which makes it the second busiest airport in Mexico behind Mexico City (Mexico News Daily). That volume is the whole argument for flying in here. Nonstop service from most large US and Canadian cities, several European carriers in season, and enough daily frequency that a cancelled flight usually rebooks onto something the same day.Check which terminal your airline uses before you travel, because it decides where your driver meets you. Private transfers wait outside the arrivals exit of whichever terminal you land in.The part nobody warns you about happens after customs, in the corridor between the baggage carousel and the exit doors. It is lined with people in branded shirts holding clipboards, and the opener is almost always a question about your transportation: who booked it, whether it has already left, whether they can verify your reservation. They are selling timeshare presentations. Mexican travel forums have documented this for years, and the advice has not changed: keep walking until you are outside the terminal, and stop only for the specific company logo you already hired.Arrange your ride before you fly and that entire corridor becomes noise you walk past
The newer airport is officially Felipe Carrillo Puerto International, it sits south of Tulum town, and for anyone staying in Tulum it turns a two-hour transfer into a half-hour one. That is a real difference on a short trip. Land at nine in the evening and you are at dinner instead of on the highway.
Schedule is where it gives the ground back. Tulum handles a fraction of Cancun’s traffic, with fewer routes and thinner frequency, so a route that looks convenient on a map can require a connection through Mexico City or Dallas. We have watched guests save forty minutes of driving and spend three extra hours in a connecting terminal to do it.
Compare the whole door-to-door trip before you decide. Departure time, layovers, fare, transfer: if the total still favors Tulum, book Tulum.
Four options get you from the terminal to the coast, and they are not equally good for the same trip.
A private transfer booked in advance is the low-friction choice, especially for a group with luggage, car seats or a late arrival. The driver waits with a name card past the exit doors and the arrival corridor never becomes a decision point.
Rent a car if you plan to move around. Highway 307 runs the length of the coast, it is a modern divided road, and the driving is straightforward. Two things to know: many gated communities and private properties include parking, so confirm before you book a car you have nowhere to leave, and returning the car adds an hour of buffer to your departure day.
The Tren Maya now connects a station attached to Cancun airport with Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and a station opened next to Tulum airport in September 2024. It is comfortable and it solves the corridor. It does not solve the last few kilometers to a villa, so plan the final leg separately.
ADO runs scheduled coaches from both airports along the same corridor: low fares, a fixed timetable, and a drop-off point that is rarely where you are staying.
Riviera Maya Haciendas handles arrivals for its own guests in Puerto Aventuras, which is the only reason we can be this specific about the drive. Same road, several times a week, in high season and low. When a family lands at CUN at eleven at night with three kids and eight bags, a pre-arranged driver gets them into bed a good hour before the taxi queue would have.
Puerto Aventuras is the one base on this coast where the two airports genuinely tie. Cancun is an hour and a half north, Tulum an hour and a quarter south, and the fifteen minutes between them should not decide anything.So book on the flight instead. Cancun usually wins on nonstop options from North America, which for most of our guests settles before the drive is even part of the conversation. No single airport carries the region’s name. Two serve it: Cancun International (CUN) at the northern end and Tulum International (TQO) at the southern end. Everything in between is reached by road from one of the two.
CUN for Cancun and TQO for Tulum. If a booking site asks for a Riviera Maya airport code, it is almost certainly routing you to CUN.
It depends where in the region you are going. Playa del Carmen is 45 minutes, Puerto Aventuras an hour and a half, Akumal an hour and 45 minutes, Tulum two hours and 15 minutes. The coastal strip runs from Puerto Morelos down to Tulum, so the answer changes a lot between its two ends.
Tulum, by roughly fifteen minutes. The gap is small enough that the flight schedule and fare should make the call.
Cozumel (CZM) is on an island, so reaching the mainland means a ferry to Playa del Carmen plus ground transport from there. It works if Cozumel is part of your trip and adds a leg if it is not.
Highway 307 is a divided highway with steady traffic and it is the road every transfer uses. Arriving guests do it after dark year round. Book the transfer in advance rather than sorting it out in the arrivals hall at midnight, which is a comfort question more than a safety one.
