Cabo vs Cancun: which is better for a group trip?
For most groups, Cancun and the Riviera Maya south of it: a warm, calm Caribbean you can swim in, nonstop flights from most US and Canadian cities, and cenotes and Mayan ruins within a day. Cabo wins on desert scenery, golf, sport fishing and a shorter flight from the US West, but most of its beaches are unsafe for swimming.
Below: the two coasts side by side, where each one wins, which suits your kind of group, and where 30 to 126 guests stay together.

Where each one wins
What each coast does best
Two very different places. Here is what each one is good at, and what to know before you choose.
The Pacific and the Sea of Cortez · Los Cabos airport
Where Cabo wins
Good for Golfers, anglers, whale watchers, and groups flying from the US West.
Cabo is desert meeting the ocean: cliffs, the Arch at Land’s End and long Pacific views. It has 18 golf courses open for play, marlin fishing in summer, and whales offshore from December to April.
For a group from California or the Pacific Northwest, the flight is shorter than to Cancun, and the drive from the airport to the villas in San José del Cabo is 15 to 25 minutes.
Worth knowing Most of Cabo’s beaches face the open Pacific and are unsafe for swimming in any season; the calm, swimmable bays are on the Sea of Cortez side. Check where the villa’s beach is before you book.
Mexico’s Caribbean coast · Cancun or Tulum airport
Where Cancun and the Riviera Maya win
Good for Families, mixed ages, swimmers and snorkelers, and groups flying from all over the US and Canada.
The sea is the Caribbean: warm, mostly calm, and good for swimming and snorkeling, with the world’s second-longest reef offshore. Inland there are cenotes, freshwater pools in the jungle, and the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá.
Cancun airport has nonstop flights from most large US and Canadian cities. From the haciendas in Puerto Aventuras, the nearest cenotes are about 10 minutes away and the Tulum ruins about 35 minutes.
Worth knowing June to November is hurricane season. Sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches between spring and late summer; how much varies by year and by beach.
Which suits your group
Cabo or Cancun, for your kind of group
