Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is a small, gated marina town on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the Riviera Maya, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is quiet and walkable, built around its marina, with calm beaches on either side. Here is where it is, how to get there, what to do and where to stay, from people who live and work here: our four haciendas stand side by side on the beach in Puerto Aventuras.

Where is Puerto Aventuras?

Puerto Aventuras is in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, on the coast road (Highway 307) that runs south from Cancun to Tulum. By car, without traffic, it is about:

  • 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen
  • 15 minutes north of Akumal
  • 35 minutes north of the Tulum ruins, and 40 minutes from Tulum town
  • 1 hour from Cancun airport, and 1 hour 15 from Tulum airport
  • 1 hour 30 from Cancun itself

The town sits on the sea side of the highway: inside the gate are the marina, the beaches, the restaurants and most places to stay. The residential side of town is across the road.

Is Puerto Aventuras a gated community?

Yes. Puerto Aventuras is a gated marina community: you come in through a controlled entrance, and inside, the marina, the beaches and the restaurants are a walk or a short bike ride apart. That calm is a big part of why families and groups choose it.

How to get to Puerto Aventuras

Most visitors fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN), which has the most flights from the US and Canada, and drive about 1 hour south. Tulum International Airport (TQO) is about 1 hour 15 away and has fewer flights. More on which airport to fly into.

  • Private transfer: the simplest option with a family or a group. Your host or concierge can book it.
  • Rental car: handy for day trips; the coast road is straightforward.
  • Shared shuttle: cheaper, with stops along the way.

Once you are here, you can walk or bike to the marina, the beaches and the restaurants.

Is Puerto Aventuras worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a calm base rather than a scene. Puerto Aventuras has no big clubs and no high-rise resort strip. It has a marina, beaches, restaurants by the water, and the rest of the Riviera Maya a short drive away. It suits families with children, multigenerational trips, groups who want to stay together, divers and anglers. If you want nightlife every night, Playa del Carmen is 20 minutes north: easy for an evening out.

Things to do in Puerto Aventuras

The marina

The marina is the heart of town. Sport-fishing, diving, snorkeling and sailing trips leave from its docks, restaurants and bars line the water, and the marina has a dolphin habitat.

The beaches

The beaches in Puerto Aventuras are calm, good for swimming and for snorkeling with children. Fatima Bay, beside the marina, is the best known.

Cenotes

The nearest cenotes are about 10 minutes away. Just south of town, the Kantun-Chi eco-park has several cenotes and an underground river you can visit with a guide, and the larger cave cenotes are about 35 minutes south. More in our guide to the cenotes.

Golf

Puerto Aventuras has its own golf course, inside the community.

Day trips from Puerto Aventuras

  • Akumal, where sea turtles feed in the bay: about 15 minutes
  • The Xcaret and Xel-Há parks: about 20 and 25 minutes
  • The Tulum ruins: about 35 minutes
  • Cobá: about 1 hour 15
  • Valladolid: about 2 hours
