Cancun is the big resort city by the main airport; Tulum is ruins, cenotes and boutique hotels. Groups often stay in between, on the Riviera Maya.
Updated 5 min read

The short answer: choose Cancun for big resorts, nightlife and the shortest ride from the airport. Choose Tulum for Maya ruins above the sea, cenotes and small boutique hotels. If you are a family or a group who wants a bit of both and a quieter beach, look at the coast in between: the Riviera Maya, which runs south from Cancun to Tulum.
Both are on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, in the state of Quintana Roo, and most visitors to either one land at Cancun airport. They feel very different, though. Here is what each does best, how they compare side by side, and where a group fits.
| Cancun | Tulum | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A city, with a Hotel Zone of large resorts on a strip of sand about 23 km long | A small town with Maya ruins on a cliff and a beach road of boutique hotels |
| The feel | Busy and lively, built for scale | Slower and greener, design-led |
| Where you sleep | Large resorts and all-inclusives | Small hotels and villas, low-rise |
| Nightlife | Clubs and late bars | Beach clubs and long dinners |
| Ruins and cenotes | A few small sites; the big ones are a drive away | The Tulum ruins in town, cenotes all around |
| Airport | Cancun airport, about 30 minutes away | Tulum airport about 40 minutes; Cancun airport about 1 hour 40 |
| Best for | A first trip, a short break, an all-inclusive week | Couples and friends who want food, ruins and nature |
Cancun is the easiest beach trip in Mexico to plan. Cancun airport has flights from most big US and Canadian cities, and the Hotel Zone is about 30 minutes from it. The Zone is a strip of sand about 23 km long, between the Caribbean and the Nichupté lagoon, lined with large resorts, restaurants, malls and the clubs that keep Cancun busy until late.
The beaches are wide and white. The stretch that faces north, toward Isla Mujeres, has calmer water; the long east-facing stretch, where Playa Delfines is, meets the open sea and gets more waves. From Cancun you can take the ferry to Isla Mujeres for the day, snorkel over the MUSA underwater sculptures, or walk the small El Rey ruins inside the Hotel Zone.
Cancun suits a first trip to Mexico, a short break, an all-inclusive week with everything in one place, and anyone who wants nightlife a short walk away.
Tulum is smaller and slower. Its ruins, a walled Maya city on a cliff above the sea, are among the most photographed sites in Mexico. Around the town are cenotes, the freshwater sinkholes you can swim and snorkel in, and to the south is the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.
Most visitors stay in town or along the beach road, where low-rise boutique hotels, restaurants and beach clubs sit among the palms. Tulum now has its own airport, about 40 minutes from town; Cancun airport is about 1 hour 40 away.
Tulum suits couples and friends who care more about food, design, ruins and nature than about a big resort.
It depends on how you travel. Cancun has far more hotel rooms, so it has more all-inclusive deals and more choice at every budget. Tulum’s boutique hotels and beach-road restaurants often cost more per night than a comparable stay in Cancun. We look at the numbers in what a trip to Tulum really costs.
Both have white sand and turquoise water. Cancun’s beaches are long and sit in front of the hotels; Tulum’s are lined with palms and low buildings, and feel wilder. For swimming with young children, look for Cancun’s north-facing beaches or the reef-protected bays of the Riviera Maya, between the two.
Many trips booked as “Cancun” never stay in Cancun. You land at Cancun airport and drive south on the coast road to the Riviera Maya: Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and on to Tulum. For a family or a group, this middle stretch is often the better base:
That is where our four haciendas are: side by side on the beach in Puerto Aventuras, about 1 hour from Cancun airport (1 hour 15 from Tulum’s). Each has 10 to 15 suites and its own team, with a chef, butlers and a concierge, and together they sleep up to 126 guests. For a smaller group, we also have villas in Tulum and in Cancun.
Yes. Stay in the middle of the coast and make each one a day out: the Tulum ruins and a cenote in the morning, before the heat; Cancun for a day in the Hotel Zone or the ferry to Isla Mujeres. From the haciendas, Tulum town is about 40 minutes by car and Cancun about 1 hour 30.

No. Cancun is a city at the northern tip of Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Tulum is a separate, much smaller town about 1 hour 40 south of Cancun airport by car, at the southern end of the Riviera Maya. Both are in the state of Quintana Roo.
Cancun is the easier trip: a short airport transfer, big resorts with kids’ clubs and calm north-facing beaches. Tulum is better for older children who enjoy ruins and cenotes. Many families stay in between, on the Riviera Maya, in a villa or a house with room for everyone.
Per night, often yes. Tulum’s boutique hotels usually cost more than a comparable room in Cancun, which has many more hotels and all-inclusive deals.
Tulum airport, about 40 minutes from town. Cancun airport has many more flights and is about 1 hour 40 from Tulum by car.
No. Cancun has the big clubs and the late nights. Tulum’s nightlife is beach clubs, dinners and the occasional party night.
Often neither. Groups of 20 or more usually find it easier to rent private houses on the Riviera Maya, between the two, where several houses can sit side by side. Our four haciendas in Puerto Aventuras sleep up to 126 guests together, about 1 hour from Cancun airport.
