Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun: which is better for a group trip?

Cancun and the Riviera Maya win on the water: a warm, calm Caribbean with the reef offshore, cenotes and Mayan ruins nearby, and nonstop flights from most US and Canadian cities. Puerto Vallarta wins on the town: a walkable old town and seafront Malecón, green mountains down to the bay, and Punta Mita’s golf and surf.

Below: the two coasts side by side, where each one wins, which suits your kind of group, and where 30 to 126 guests stay together.

Where each one wins

What each coast does best

Both are easy trips from the US and Canada. They feel very different once you land.

  1. The Pacific, on Banderas Bay · Puerto Vallarta airport

    Where Puerto Vallarta wins

Good for Groups who want a real town to walk, mountain scenery, golf and surf.

Puerto Vallarta is a town first: an old quarter, the Zona Romántica, and the Malecón, a walkway along the sea in the centre. Behind it the Sierra Madre runs green down to the bay, and the sun sets over the water.

North across the bay, Punta Mita is a gated peninsula with resort hotels, golf courses and surf, about 45 minutes from the airport. Humpback whales come into Banderas Bay to breed in winter.

Worth knowing The rain falls from mid-June to mid-October, most of it July to September, and the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs mid-May to November. In our count, Punta Mita’s largest beachfront houses had 10 to 12 bedrooms; a bigger group splits across villas or a hotel.

  2. Mexico’s Caribbean coast · Cancun or Tulum airport

Where Cancun and the Riviera Maya win

Good for Swimmers and snorkelers, families, and groups flying from all over the US and Canada.

The sea is the Caribbean: warm and mostly calm, with the world’s second-longest reef offshore. Inland there are cenotes, freshwater pools in the jungle, and the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá.

Cancun airport has nonstop flights from most large US and Canadian cities. From the haciendas in Puerto Aventuras, the nearest cenotes are about 10 minutes away, Akumal’s turtles about 15 minutes, the Tulum ruins about 35 minutes.

Worth knowing June to November is hurricane season. Sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches between spring and late summer; how much varies by year and by beach.

What people ask

Questions about Puerto Vallarta and Cancun

Is Puerto Vallarta or Cancun better?

For the sea, Cancun and the Riviera Maya: a warm, mostly calm Caribbean with the reef offshore, plus cenotes and Mayan ruins, and nonstop flights from most large US and Canadian cities. For a town to walk, mountain scenery and Pacific sunsets, Puerto Vallarta; for golf and surf, Punta Mita on the same bay.

Which has better beaches, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun?

For swimming and snorkeling, Cancun and the Riviera Maya: the Caribbean is warm and mostly calm, with the reef offshore. Puerto Vallarta’s beaches sit on a Pacific bay below green mountains, and Punta Mita has surf.

When is the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta and in Cancun?

In Puerto Vallarta the rain falls from mid-June to mid-October, most of it July to September. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are dry from December to April, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November.

Is Punta Mita part of Puerto Vallarta?

Punta Mita is the northern point of Banderas Bay, the bay Puerto Vallarta sits on, about 45 minutes by car from Puerto Vallarta airport. It is a gated peninsula with resort hotels, golf courses and villas.

Puerto Vallarta or the Riviera Maya for a group of 40?

Every hacienda rents from 4 suites, from $2,860 a night plus 22% tax, for 3 nights or more (4 at Jaguar); food and drink are billed on top.

How far are the haciendas from the airport?

About 1 hour from Cancun airport (1 hour 15 from Tulum’s). Your concierge arranges the transfers, staggered to your group’s flights.
